Experiment 022
Have you ever wanted to treat your life as an experiment? Because if you have I invite you to join me in what I am calling Experiment 022. In less than a week I will be celebrating my 22nd birthday. And from my 22nd birthday to my 23rd birthday I will be conducting a science experiment on my own life.
This isn’t about rebooting my life, or even changing everything overnight. This isn’t a 75 Hard challenge that if you fail one day you have to start over. This experiment is because I'm tired of living life passively, I want to be more intentional. To be more intentional with my choices, I don’t know about you but I need data. That’s why this I an experiment and not a Challenge.
I will be following the scientific method, so there will be a lab notebook, with research, a hypothesis, data, theories along the way, and hopefully by the end I will have 365+ days of data on myself including how often I read my bible, workout, invested, and what I ate. My goal with this experiment is to prove to myself that small tasks and investments will make impact over time. in theory I know this true, but I can’t prove it in my own life. And sometimes the best way to argue with your own mind is to preform science experiments with evidence.
So here’s the deal, because this is an experiment there are rules and processes that I will be following, (all designed by me, and occasionally ChatGPT) each process is attached to a goal. An example and how I broke it down.
Goal: Intentionally build a relationship with God, though reading and studying, questions and searching for answers, and prayer.
I laid out what I want to invest it, what the end goal is and how I am going to do that. But let’s break it down a bit more. Reading and Studying. Because I want to read my bible more, I set a second goal, to read the Bible in a year, so following the goal and plan is my action step, find a 1 year bible reading plan. Now I have a 1 year bible reading plan, for studying I have a family bible study I am doing with my mom and sister, I found a women’s bible study to attend 1 night a week, I take notes during sermons, and when I miss church I do my best to watch recorded sermons. I also found a few online pastors and church leaders who I will listen to their sermons and lectures during the week, when I don’t have bible study, or on Sunday afternoons. The questions and searching for answers is tied into the study a lot, when I’m reading, when i’m listening to sermons, I write down any questions I have and instead of just leaving them on the page, I actually started looking them up. And prayer, I can think better on paper (not sure about typing) so I found a Journaling Bible and I write down my prayers on the journaling areas. I’m aware this isn’t a revolutionary idea, but I was to me. I was tired of carrying around a sermon notebook, a prayer journal, and my bible. You can actually use the journal pages for both sermon notes and prayers. I just know that wouldn’t work well for me when I’m taking notes, for where I am right now in life. But I have in the past when I forgot my sermon notes at home.
Goal- Goal: Intentionally build a relationship with God, though reading and studying, questions and searching for answers, and prayer.
Plan- Set up Bible Journaling and Sermon Notes Systems, find 2-5 trusted sources of theology online or in books.
Action- Weekly Church Service, Bible Study, Online Sermon when I can’t attend in person due to traveling, work, or illness. Daily- On days when I have more time, not just reading my bible studying it and writing out my prayers. On days I don’t have a lot of time or most the time energy, I read the Proverb of the day, and write out my prayers.
Does it make sense how I’m taking a goal or thought and breaking down into tasks that can be completed weekly or daily?
I am doing this for various areas of my life, I guess the biggest goal of this is to invest in 8 forms of capital, and collect the data to prove to myself that I did. And to build a foundation of habits and practices that will continue on for the rest of my life. My health not great, I need to get various autoimmune disease under control and my weight. I am working on building 2 business, writing this blog, working a part time job, this seems like the easiest way to find out if my actually daily actions line up with my goals.
